WHY BESPOKE?
In 2011, marked by its move form Johannesburg
to the Cape, PHI decided to focus its production on
bespoke loudspeakers - that is loudspeakers custom
designed and hand made for our customers. This
seems a logical response. Occupying a niche market
comprising the most discerning audio enthusiasts and
having committed itself to detail, regarding both
the choice of components and materials as well as
the design and manufacturing processes, very little
had distinguished PHI from being a fully customised
loudspeaker manufacturing establishment. The main
existing lines of loudspeaker models such as the
downPHI® , the phISH and the
Siderium would be continued, with minor
modifications, and current production would be
conceived around these broad concepts.
So what are these? Broadly, these are three kinds
of loudspeakers: the Voigt pipe (TQWT), the
intensated short horn (ISH) and the double taper
tuned pipe (DTTP); all three employ single driver
reproduction (in some cases enhanced by support
drivers at the frequency extremes) and bi-pole or
our new π-pole
architecture.
The ISH is a Voigt pipe, but with substantial
mass-loading, making the loudspeakers smaller in
order to enable them to fit in the average modern
home.
The DTTP consists two back to back Voigt pipes,
joined at their bases, enabling very low frequency
reproduction.
SO HOW DOES ONE GO ABOUT
ORDERING?
The order process is simple:
- Contact PHI by sending us an
email
- Specify your needs in terms of
size/cost/application and/or which of our models
seem appropriate
- Specify drivers you might be interested in (or
already possess) and your materials of choice
- PHI shall respond with suggestions and a
quotation
- When the quotation is accepted, a 50% deposit
is made to cover immediate costs
- PHI shall indicate the time required for
development and manufacture
- Production commences, with frequent updates
sent to the client
- Delivery
PHI has, for the almost five years it has been in operation, continued to
impress just about every person who has had the opportunity to audition our
products, many claiming that these are the loudspeakers they have had to compare
any loudspeakers they've since encountered with. We are confident of continuing,
if not improving upon, this tradition.

Siderium DTTP
Ultra-Low Bass Stereo
Audiophile Loudspeaker System.
The Siderium is a
visually stunning loudspeaker for the purist.
Constructed from solid American walnut, it excels in
any kind of music and has bass extension and clarity
far beyond what would be possible with traditional
designs. The unique DTTP (Double Taper Tuned Pipe)
design is a world first and provides a level of
realism, involvement and immediacy that compares
with that of any loudspeaker, at any price point.

Yggdrasil
High-Sensitivity Stereo Audiophile Loudspeaker System
The Yggdrasil is a visually stunning fullrange
single-driver loudspeaker for the purist.
Constructed from a mix of Baltic birch ply and
Sapele mahogany and employing custom built
high-sensitivity drivers suitable for use with low
power valve amplifiers, it excels in jazz, classical
and vocal music. The design was optimised to provide
exceptional levels of realism, emotional involvement
and energy, design goals impossible to meet with
traditional box speaker types.

SoundFilament
Ultra-Detailed Audiophile Interconnect
Thicker cables are not necessarily better. Effects
involving the surface of cables and dielectrics have
been shown to deteriorate signal. The soundFILAMENT
cleverly sidesteps these phenomena by using a
twisted pair construction, ultra thin dielectric and
silver plated copper conductors, providing one with
a sense of clarity and detail difficult to find at
five times this price.

The Khaen
High-Sensitivity Stereo Audiophile Loudspeaker System
Named after a bamboo flute from Laos, the khene or khaen,
pronounced [khε:n],
the Khaen is a high-sensitivity TQWT with an unique port
system capable of 50 Watt RMS power handling and in
excess of 101dB / 2.83V efficiency. This magnificent
loudspeaker has now been released. |

The Ocarina TC9
The Ocarina TC9 is a 3.5" fullrange driver
desktop audio loudspeaker system.
The Ocarina is our smallest loudspeaker. A cross
between a reflex enclosure and a tapered
quarter-wave pipe, it's equipped with a single
high-quality fullrange driver. This is the identical
driver we use in our more illustrious Siderium
loudspeaker. Silky smooth accurate delivery is what
can be expected, with surprising bass extension. As
its larger siblings, it's made from purple heart
timber and ply. Suitable for desktops and
bookshelves.

A-periodic EXOLINEA® tuned pipes
PHI, in collaboration with
[object house], have embarked on the
design and manufacture of an affordable range of
tuned pipe loudspeakers. These speakers comprise an
upward firing bass driver, a forward firing
fullrange driver and a side-firing auxiliary driver
housed in an attractive smaller sized
upward-tapering box. Manufactured from a mixture of
quality imported Baltic Birch ply wood with solid
wood inserts, these speakers promise the
reproduction quality and extension of our "bespoke"
models in a more affordable and versatile package.
We'll keep this page updated with news. |

A 400W Monster Pipe
An 8 inch carbon fibre and two high power ferrofluid cooled paper cone
fullrange drivers with a ribbon supertweeter in either a folded TQWT (otherwise
it's 3m tall) or a DTTP. Efficiency would be around 100dB per Watt. Bipolar, as
most of our loudspeakers, with a minimal serial crossover. Response from about
27Hz to 40kHz for the folded TQWT and 18Hz to 40kHz for the DTTP. The downside
of the DTTP is a length of just under 2.5 meter. But then it looks rather like
the Naledi above.. The prototype sounds very promising and plays more than loud
enough with a mere 3 or 4 Watt of input. |
