downPHI® 46.40
Enhanced Stereo Audiophile
Loudspeaker System
The downPHI® 46.40 is a visually stunning loudspeaker for the purist. Being
a smaller loudspeaker, it's most comfortable with small ensemble classical, jazz
and vocal music. The unique bi-polar design and small point-source drivers
provide a realism, purity of sound and immediacy that might prove extremely
difficult to find in any loudspeaker, at any price.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
The downPHI® was envisioned as a pared-down version of the Cyclops 58.40,
omitting the costly and hard to manufacture external filter unit and tuned for
more bass output. It, quite ironically, turned out very well, in some ways
upstaging the Cyclops. Among its stronger points are an extended low frequency
range (-3dB at 44Hz) and a livelier character that, in addition to the
refinement of the Cyclops II, deals surprisingly well with the kind of music
that appeals to a younger generation. The loudspeakers are mounted on spiked
wooden plinths that house the filter units. An active baffle step filter will be
available for this model, but should amplifier power not be a problem (anything
better than 10W per channel), this part of the minimal filter can also be housed
in the plinth. downPHI® detail
The loudspeaker is manufactured from an MDF and natural wood sandwich. Iroko
wood was used in the model depicted above. A heavy base firms up low frequency
reproduction and increases finesse and neutrality.
It constantly amazes one to hear the amount of clear bass that these little
speakers can reproduce. |
