The Khaen Tapered Quarter Wave Pipe
High-efficiency Stereo Audiophile Loudspeaker System
The Khaen is a visually stunning loudspeaker for the
for the single ended valve amplifier enthusiast. It
reproduces any
kind of music with consummate ease, with a special
flair for vocals and chamber music. Sensitivity is
in excess of 100dB/Watt through most of the audio
band, allowing it to be powered with flea
amplifiers. The new floorPHI® port has
simplified the design considerably, producing lower,
cleaner low frequencies with minimal high frequency
"port bleed", providing levels of clarity and energy
we have not been able to attain with the previous
systems. This loudspeaker is
fresh off the workshop floor and much better than we
expected.
TECHNICAL DETAILS
This is an almost standard Voigt pipe, with dual
forward and aft firing ports. Conical horn mass loading is
provided by the gap between the pipe base and the
floor/plinth. This distance is standardised in
delivered models, but can be tuned for a specific
listening space. Built around
high sensitivity dual-cone paper drivers with unique sets of physical attributes, this loudspeaker
allows us to recreate more and cleaner low frequency
content than would be possible with commonly used
pipe drivers in pipes of this length. We are proud
to add another unique member to our growing line-up of exceptional PHI
loudspeakers. Simulations indicate a low frequency -3dB point at
between 35Hz and 40Hz and a -10dB point of around 27Hz for a
high excursion 8 inch and 6 inch drivers operated full range.
We are
expecting 50W RMS
power handling and some of the lowest and fastest clean bass we have been able to
reproduce up to now. Coupled with lively, involving
and detailed 'in the room with the performers' delivery, this
loudspeaker excels on every level. The speaker
depicted in the concept drawing on the left, is manufactured
with a solid Purple Heart face and back and 30mm solid bamboo
sides. Sensitivity should be the highest
we have been able to obtain due to the drivers, a very
minimal crossover (only two components) and a high sensitivity super tweeter.
As is usual with PHI products, the look of these units equals their performance.
