The Double Taper Tuned Pipe - The "Naledi"

Glue two Voigt pipes base to base and open a port at the top of one of the pipes and you have a DTTP. We have just finished our first set of loudspeakers using this configuration and the results are very promising. Inspired by the exhaust pipes of two stroke motor cycles - a hobby of yours truly as a younger man - and bolstered by a remarkable Kevlar driver specially made for us in China, we have high hopes that this might be one of our finer loudspeakers. Simulations indicated a low frequency -3dB point of 31Hz and a -10dB point of 20Hz for a 5 inch driver operated fullrange. We have now measured our first pair and the performance turned out much better than expected, the lows falling within +/- 3dB down to 10Hz in room. Coupled with very fast and crystal clear delivery, this loudspeaker might be a winner. The speaker, a photo of which can be seen below, was made from solid African Rosewood with slabs of MDF on the inside of the front and rear baffles to stabilise the wood and damp resonances. The pipes sound exceptionally clean and play with an ease uncommon for any loudspeaker. Sensitivity turned out much higher than expected - we attribute this to a very minimal crossover on the high sensitivity supertweeter (only one component). As is usual with our products, the look of these units equals their performance.

The Naledi

The Naledi sells at a retail price of R15 500.00 (about $1500) per rosewood pair. The prices for speakers made in other wood types will be made available on request.
